Summer Arts Program for K-6 Students
Art Scouts is a summer arts program for students entering grades K–6. Every Saturday in July, our education team assembles a band of scouts and sallies forth into the uncharted territory of Maxon Mills' summer exhibition. Along the way, they embark on scavenger hunts, make observational drawings, and have gallery conversations. Returning to the Art Nest, students work on individual and collaborative projects based on their travels, culminating in a mini-exhibition of their own at the end of the month.
For 2018, the four Saturday sessions were led by Nadia Odlum, one of our summer education fellows and artists-in-residence. Supporting Nadia’s curriculum for Art Scouts, we were fortunate to have Jean-Carla Rodea and Kathie Halfin, also here as education fellows and artists-in-residence this summer. Throughout the month, Nadia had students thinking about movement, navigation, and urban environments. At the fourth and final session of the month, 24 students, ranging in age from 5 to 11, presented their sculptures and installations outside on the deck at Maxon Mills. And as a special surprise, we were fortunate to have dancer, choreographer, and artist-in-residence Amanda Edwards stop by to perform an improvisational dance with the students’ sculptures.
Until next year!
