THE ART NEST

“The Art Nest is a haven for my kids. We’ve been coming here for three years now. Every weekend, my two kids come away with new techniques and ideas to experiment with. It’s everything I could have hoped for in a weekend program for my kids. They absolutely love it.”

Monthly Art Nest Themes

From September 2019 through April 2020, we’re exploring the five senses in the Art Nest. Taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound are powerful forces — they can unleash our creative forces, and are a direct route into how we make sense of the world and ourselves.

September: Sight

This month we will explore how sight can expand our artistic horizons through exploring illumination, shadow drawing, perspective, magnification, kaleidoscopes, and faux stained glass.

October: Touch

How can focusing on the way something feels inspire the art that we make? Inspired by Halloween, this month we will explore making furry and fuzzy petite monsters, tactile puppets, sand, paper marbling with shaving cream, rug latch hooking, and weaving with wool.

November: Taste

Let’s sip on aromatic teas while we make things in the Art Nest (maybe you’ll even taste something new!) Let’s make our own teas; what new tea ingredients can we discover? Let’s make potions with good intentions for ourselves and others, jello molds, fake candy, and paper mache donuts.

December: Hearing

How can the sounds we hear inspire unique artistic creations? Let’s make our own instruments out of recycled materials — how many different sounds can we create? How can we make loud sounds vs. soft sounds? We will create drawings and paintings inspired by music and try making our own musical scores. Maybe YOU can be a musical guest in the art Nest! How could we use the literary device “alliteration” to create art?

January: Smell

Smell is a powerful tool that brings up nostalgia for our past. Smell can also effect our moods by making us either calm or agitated. How can we harness the power of smell to create works of art? Let’s sew little pouches and fill them with amazing smelling things like lavender and rose petals (and what else should we add?) Let’s think about where we can put patches — can we sew them on to our clothes or bags? We will be making soap, too — what interesting things could we use as molds? Let’s make our own perfume — how do the different smells make us feel?

February: Smell and Taste

This month, we’ll look at what it would be like to make art inspired by combining two senses. Would it be sensory overload? What projects could we come up with? Could we make a peach that smells and feels like a peach? Could we make an abstract sculpture that is inspired by an interesting smell?

March: Hearing and Touch

In what interesting ways can we bring the sensation of touch and hearing together to make works of art? Instruments are typically played with our hands. What types of strange and unique things that we touch can make sounds? Shall we record ourselves?

April: Taste, Smell, Hearing, Touch, and Sight

This month will consist of a multisensory approach to making art, taking into account all of the things we have learned and done over the year in the Art Nest!

May through September

Project themes will be inspired by art on display throughout our Summer show.
